Iran to hold military exercises in August — Defense Minister
Military and Security 7/18/2007 4:31:00 PM
TEHRAN, July 18 (KUNA) — Iran will hold military exercises next month in which the country will use for the first time its local military aircraft "Azarakhsh", Minister of Defense, Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, said Wednesday.
The Ministry of Defense and the Army will hold joint military exercises next month, Najjar told reporters following a meeting for the Cabinet adding that "the fighter Azarakhsh will fly for the first time in these drills besides the use of new weapons and missile." Meanwhile, the Iranian Defense Minister referred to reports, mainly Israeli and American, that Iran had 600 missiles directed at Israel saying that "They are no more than a psychological war launched by the enemy.. We serve peace and stability in the Middle East." Najjar played down the Israeli threats to his country saying that after the severe defeat in Lebanon last summer "Israel is launching a psychological war, but it cannot see mighty Iran." "We follow closely all movements by the enemy and if we see any against our land, our retaliation will be severe," he said, "We do not think the Israeli military can harm us and in the meantime time our armed forces are at their best." On boosting security cooperation with Iran's neighbors, Najjar said "We are following up the topic with the Foreign Ministry and very soon we will have joint drills and military and defense cooperation with others."(end) mw.msa KUNA 181631 Jul 07NNNN

Last month Iran stated that it would test a new type of fighter aircraft late this summer.
That new fighter will be in addition to the Azerakhsh fighter that Iran built in 1999 and the Saeqeh that Iran built in 2004.
Speculation on Iranian military forums is that the new aircraft will be an updated version of the Saeqeh, although some hold that it will be the new Shafaq stealth fighter designed with Russia's help in the early stages. That was based on the Mikoyan 1.42.

Iran was not known to have possessed advanced technology to build fighter planes or tanks. However, In April 1997 Iranian Brigadier General Arasteh, a deputy head of the General Staff of the Armed Forces (serving under Major General Ali Shahbazi, the joint chief of staff) claimed that Iran had successfully designed, constructed, and tested its first fighter aircraft, the Azarakhsh(Lightning). According to one theory, Iran cobbled together an aircraft by reverse-engineered elements from a number of other aircraft. Evidently a modified F-5, this Iranian design evolved from an examination of the wide variety of fighter aircraft in Iran's inventory which include both the F-4 and F-5, along with training and experimentation.
A scaled-up version of the US Northrop Grumman F-5f Tiger, Azarakhsh features shoulder mounted air intakes. It is said to be a 10- to 15- percent larger than the F-5. It incorporates an Iranian-designed radar, but with some of the avionics modules actually of Russian design.
Brigadier General Arasteh stated in April 1997 that the "production line of this aircraft will begin work in the near future." And Iranian officials announced in September 1997 that Iran had started mass producing its first locally-designed fighter-bomber. In February 1999 commander of the Air Force Brigadier-General Habibollah Baqaei offered a report on the achievements of the air force. He said the Air Force had made great progress since the victory of the Islamic Revolution in the operational, technical, educational and research fields and in manufacturing fighter planes of Azarakhsh and training plane of Tondar as well as radar receivers and is strong enough to defend the air-space of the Islamic Republic of Iran. In June 1999 it was reported that Iran had begun series production of the Azarakhsh. As of 2000 only four examples of the Azarakhsh were thought to be in existence, and series production was expected to start in 2001. As of 2001 there were six in inventory, with a production schedule established for 30 aircraft over the following three years.

Addressing the closing ceremony of the third stage of Drone Designing and Manufacturing Competitions here on Wednesday, General Najjar praised the country's eye-catching progress in designing and manufacturing the new generation of intelligent equipment in various industrial areas.
The minister further described Iran's self-sufficiency in the manufacture of drones as much significant, saying that remote-controlled planes play an important role in military and non-military affairs, including traffic control, geological studies, resource and mine assessment, meteorological studies, fire fighting, environment protection, sports and recreational activities.

that scare US Navy!, it is the control of Hortmuz with silk worm missile and other anti ships missiles that is count to the US Navy. The real aim is to overtake territory around the straight of Hortmuz with naval supremacy and marine forces. Be aware of that, whoever control the gate of this straight control the whole flows of oil. Its better the Iranian Navy be prepared and have adequate anti ship missiles and mines, because this this is the price for washington.

but the gulf of oman, will be where the battle, if one comes, will be decided. why do you think that iran conducted war games in the gulf of oman from their newest, and soon to be primary, naval base of bandar beheshti? the iranian navy and air force ideally must keep the us navy at the southern limits of the gulf of oman. if not possible, and i don't think that it is with present iranian capabilities, they must keep them contained in the gulf of oman.
if the iranian defence forces are able to do this, the real threat of those anti-ship missiles at queshm and other bases in the persian gulf is against commercial (OIL) shipping.if the us navy's major surface combatants even come near the straits of hormuz, that would be an indication that the iranian offensive capabilities have been effectively suppressed.
