Chavez buys Russian missiles to defend Venezuela
Sat, 12 Sep 2009 07:25:42 GMT
Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has announced the imminent delivery of Russian missiles to the South American state in a move to defend the nation from 'threats.'
Speaking at the presidential palace on Friday, the leftist leader emphasized the deterring power of Russian weapons and said that his administration is about to receive missiles capable of hitting targets within a range of 300 kilometers.
"We have signed some agreements with Russia. Soon we will begin receiving some missiles," AFP quoted Chavez as saying.
The Venezuelan president, however, stressed the defensive nature of the latest move, noting, "We're not going to attack anybody. These are just defense tools because we are going to defend our country from any threat, wherever it may come from."
Chavez visited Russia on Thursday and inked a number of deals with Russian President Dmitri Medvedev on military, oil and gas trade.
Although, the provisions of the military accords have not been disclosed to public, the Russian media reported Venezuela's determination to buy tanks and submarines as well as armored vehicles plus a number of helicopters and anti-ship missiles.
The South American state has increased its military interactions with Russia and signed arms trade agreements worth four billion dollars over the past few years.

Venezuela is getting. That's interesting.
They already have MANPAD Igla's, some TOR-M1's and (probably) Pantsir, so that leaves what? S-300, S-400? The only other missile that fits the bill is the Iskander.
Any one of which should deter Colombian(US) aggression for the time being.
I think Chavez should come up with a work-around to the constitutionally mandated no foreign military bases in Venezuela clause: a "joint" Venezuelan-Russian naval base might be a good idea right now.

to spill the beans, in order for his enemies to develop a defence option. Igla is a fairly simple 100% accurate anti aircraft missile, sufficient to deter any conventional attack from the air.

I'm pretty sure the US of Israel has already re-tasked several surveillance satellites to hone in on Venezuelan ports and airports. It won't be a secret for long.
Announcing them - AFTER they are delivered - would put the JewSA in a geopolitical dead end: even the stooge Colombian government wouldn't dare host countermeasures for fear of popular dissent; Cuba is off limits; and no one else in the region wants to cross Chavez and threaten their long term ALBA and Banco Del Sur benefits. Anything that increases Venezuela's deterrence factor is a win-win for South America as a whole.
Russian air and/or naval bases in Venezuela, Cuba, Ecuador, Bolivia...would amount to rope-a-dope tactic and isolate the JewSA, end their hegemony in SA, and further their decline.
Plans within plans...it will happen, sooner or later.

According to a French channel (TV5), it is a S-300.
