Photo credit: The island of Socotra is part of an archipelago in the Indian Ocean. It is so isolated that a third of its plant life is found nowhere else on the planet.

It is all that Informatron describes above. The world should grieve if the U.S. establishes a military base on Socotra or anywhere in The Yemen for that matter.
In the coastal regions of the Al Mahra I found people speaking a language or languages that were quite different to Arabic. Even Sana'ani's cannot understand them. I quote from "Yemen Today" April 2008: "In Yemen, few people are aware of South Arabian languages that are indigenous to Al Mahra and are still spoken there. The Mahris form one of the smallest tribal groups in Yemen and continue to speak Mehri and Hobyot, which are more closely related to the languages of Socotra such as Socotri. Other South Arabian languages Bathari, Jibbali and Harsusi are spoken as far to the east as Oman."
