Iran's Ahmadinejad Survives Grenade Attack
Submitted by Tyler Durden on 08/04/2010 04:30 -0500
IranMSNBC
Associated Press reports: "A handmade grenade exploded Wednesday near President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's convoy in western Iran, but the leader was not harmed, a conservative website reported." We are trying to determine just how this news will be spun to push the red futures (probably the first day in two weeks futures have been negative, and one of several times in the past two months this has happened) back into the green.
From AP, via MSNBC:
TEHRAN, Iran — A handmade grenade exploded Wednesday near President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's convoy in western Iran, but the leader was not harmed, a conservative website reported.
The website, khabaronline.ir, said the blast took place in Hamedan as Ahmadinejad was on his way to address a crowd. The president gave his speech as planned and it was broadcast live on state TV.
One person was arrested in connection with the attack, the report said, adding that the president's car was about 100 yards (meter) away from the site of the blast.
The website said it had no information about whether other people were injured.
"The explosion caused a lot of smoke," it said.
Officials could not immediately be reached to confirm the report.

Iran rejects Ahmadinejad attack reports
Wed, 04 Aug 2010 09:09:56 GMT
Speaking to Press TV, an informed source in Iran's presidential office has rejected as false the reports of grenade attack on Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
Some foreign news sources published reports that a grenade exploded near the motorcade of President Ahmadinejad during his visit to the western city of Hamedan on Wednesday.
The source denied the reports, saying no such attack took place.

(CBS/AP) Iranian officials denied reports Wednesday that a handmade grenade had exploded near President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's convoy in western Iran.
Conservative website khabaronline.ir said a blast took place in Hamedan as Ahmadinejad was on his way to address a crowd. The president was unharmed, according to the site, and gave his speech as planned, which was broadcast live on state TV.
Not long after reports of an apparent assassination attempt swept across the world's media, an official Iranian TV channel said "Iran vehemently denies" that the president's convoy had come under attack, blaming the explosion on a firework set off in celebration of his arrival.
Khabaronline.ir reported, however, that one person had been arrested in connection with the supposed attack, adding that the president's car was about 100 yards away from the site of the blast.
The website said it had no information about whether other people were injured, but injuries were reported by other, Arabic language news organizations.

Conflicting Reports on Alleged Assassination Attempt on Iran’s Ahmadinejad
Tehran. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad survived an attack with a homemade explosive device on his motorcade during a visit to the western city of Hamadan on Wednesday, a source in his office said.
The source said Ahmadinejad’s convoy was targeted as he was traveling from Hamadan’s airport to give a speech in a local sports arena and the president was unhurt but others had been injured in the blast.
One person had been arrested, the presidency source said.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.
Another official told AFP, however, that Ahmadinejad’s motorcade was not attacked, explaining that an explosion was from a “firecracker.”
“It was a firecracker, and a statement will be released soon,” the source from the president’s press section said.
Iran’s Arabic-language Al-Alam TV reported that the firecracker was set off to cheer the president.
Ahmadinejad later delivered a live televised speech to locals gathered in a stadium and made no reference to the alleged incident.
The populist, hardline Ahmadinejad has accumulated enemies in conservative and reformist circles in the Islamic Republic as well as abroad.
Al Arabiya television said an attacker had thrown a bomb at Ahmadinejad’s convoy before being detained.
Dubai-based Al Arabiya television cited its own sources as saying the bomb had hit a car carrying journalists and presidential staff.
Ahmadinejad appeared on live Iranian television at a sports stadium in Hamadan. He was apparently well and made no mention of any assault.
During a speech to a conference of expatriate Iranians in Tehran on Monday, Ahmadinejad said he believed he was the target of an assassination plot by Israel. “The stupid Zionists have hired mercenaries to assassinate me,” he said.
The oil market initially reacted calmly to reports of the attempted attack. One energy analyst said: “People are just waiting to see what this is about — to confirm the nature of the action.”
Ahmadinejad recently sought to isolate rival political factions by declaring that “the regime has only one party, which is the velayat” — a reference to Shiite Islam’s hidden Imam, for now represented by Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
One of Ahmadinejad’s trademarks has been constant travel around his vast country to deliver provocative speeches before outwardly adoring crowds who shout “death” to Iran’s foes.
