One Polish soldier died and five were wounded in a roadside bomb attack and hail of gunfire on a patrol in Afghanistan's eastern Ghanzi province on Friday, the Polish defence ministry said.
"Rebels prepared an ambush on a patrol of the operational forces of the Bravo battalion. There was an explosion and an exchange of fire. In result of the explosion of a roadside bomb, Staff Sergeant Dariusz Tylenda died and five other soldiers were wounded," said a ministry statement.
The wounded soldiers were evacuated by helicopter to a hospital at a base in Ghazni. One was in serious condition.
Advertisement: Story continues belowPoland has 2,500 troops in the international force battling the Taliban in Afghanistan and is due to raise their number to 2,600 by the end of the year.
Twenty Polish soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since Poland first sent troops there in March 2002, including three since June 12.
Polish troops should be out of Afghanistan before 2013, Defence Minister Bodan Klich said in June.
