ISLAMABAD – The Senate Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs, Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan has called for an active role of the parliamentarians, both from Pakistan and Afghanistan, in responding to the common challenges such as terrorism and extremism.
The Committee has also urged the need to evolve workable and effective strategies to overcome the issues being created as a result of terrorism and extremism.
The Committee, led by Senator Salim Saifullah Khan, held a detailed meeting with the visiting Afghan delegation headed by Jamahir Anwari, Minister for Refugees and Repatriation Affairs, at the Parliament House on Friday.
It observed that the daunting challenge of terrorism must be faced with determination to stamp out the issue completely.
The members of the Committee underscored the need for a closer collaboration between the Parliamentarians of the two sides. “We have had enough strife, trouble and turmoil since 1979 and this is about time to put the past behind us and to promise our people a better tomorrow”, they added.
They held the view that the terrorists and troublemakers in both the countries should not be allowed to hold the peace and tranquillity of the region hostage to their whims, and must be dealt with strongly and forcefully.
“These two nations have great potential to move towards progress and prosperity but peace is the essential pre-requisite to development”, they observed. The members further added that the Parliamentarians must make every effort to restore peace in their respective countries.
