The man who broke into the Turkish Embassy in Tel Aviv says Israel’s failure to protect him forced him to seek asylum in Turkey. Nadim Injaz is reportedly an Israeli informer wanted by the Palestinian Authority for treason.

Injaz’s lawyer, Avital Horev, said on Wednesday that his client decided to seek political asylum in Turkey after Shin Bet — Israel’s internal security service which he was working for — refused to recognize its responsibility towards him and put his life at risk. Horev also said Injaz was collaborating with Shin Bet since 2002 and that he was even asked to assassinate Marwan Barghouti, a leading Palestinian figure who is in Israeli jail.

Injaz, who was born in the West Bank city of Ramallah, forced his way into the Turkish Embassy with a knife and a toy gun on Tuesday and took two hostages, demanding political asylum.

Following a six-hour standoff, embassy security guards captured Injaz after shooting him in the leg. He was later handed over to Israeli police who transferred him to hospital.

Shin Bet has denied having any connection with Injaz.
