Soldier killed by gunmen fire in Kirkuk

KIRKUK / Aswat al-Iraq: A soldier was shot dead by gunmen fire in southern Kirkuk city on Thursday, according to a source from the Joint Coordination Center (JCC).
“Unidentified gunmen in a BMW vehicle with unknown number plates attacked an Iraqi army soldier from the 12th Division off a shopping mall in southern Kirkuk, killing him instantly,” the source told Aswat al-Iraq news agency.
Meanwhile, Brigadier Sarhad Qader, the director of the Kirkuk Districts’ Police Department (KDPD), said joint forces from the KDPD and the Tarklan police station arrested today (Aug. 19) a wanted man in accordance with Article 4 of the law on terrorism at a checkpoint on the Kirkuk-Huweija road.
“The arrested man was handed over to the Kirkuk Anti-Crime Department for investigations,” said Qader.
The oil-rich Kirkuk, a city of mixed Kurdish, Turkmen and Arab population, lies 250 km northeast of the Iraqi capital Baghdad.
