ArticleListenComments.Share SANGIN, Afghanistan, Aug. 19 (UPI) — Two soldiers were killed and other U.S. Marines and British soldiers have been hit by snipers in Sangin, Afghanistan, in recent days, Marine officials said.
One or two snipers, who have shown good marksmanship, have tormented the men of Lima Company, Third Battalion, Seventh Marine regiment and British forces, The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.
"He's hitting people — that's very disruptive. But it's not interfering with what we're trying to do here," said 1st Sgt. John Calhoun, 41, of Konawa, Okla.
On Aug. 13, the day the company arrived in Sangin, a Marine stepped from his armored vehicle about 100 yards from a secure U.S.-British patrol base. The sniper fired a single shot, killing the soldier, the Journal said.
On the same day, Darren Foster, 20, a British army engineer from Carlisle, England, was shot and killed as he walked in an unprotected small space that bridge two areas of bulletproof glass, the Journal reported.
"(The sniper) hit a moving target in a space this big," said Capt. Jim Nolan, Lima Company's commander, indicating a space of 9 inches with his hands.
On Aug. 14, a U.S. tank mechanic was hit in the torso, but was protected by his body armor, the newspaper said.
On Sunday, Lance Cpl. Derek Simpson was hit in the head by a bullet, but was not seriously injured.
Fifteen minutes after Simpson was taken to the patrol base, another Marine was hit, but the wound was not life-threatening, the Journal said.

The expert sniping by the Red Army didn't stop the German army in Stalingrad, either. BUT it did put fear deep into the Invaders' psyche that its morale was seriously impaired. Apparently, the Afghan Resistance is learning that valuable lesson and putting it into practice brilliantly. Bravo to the heroic Afghan Resistance--$500 AK-47s can effectively negate and "outgun" the Imperialists' billion-dollar WMDs!

"russian" is no good as "a sniper's weapon"....what they need is the old US M1-Garand/30-06 ("the ought-6").....that'll go _straight through_ kevlar armour.....
Sth Korea currently has heaps of these....they tried to "flog them off" to the US but Obongo stymied the sale/import!

Has the ruggedness of the ak47
The accuracy of a sniper rifer
the power of a 7.62x54 (better than nato 308)
an ideal sniper weapon. Not the ultra fancy scmancy weapons US snipers use to kill innocent civillians but a rugged reliable and accurate weapon (A regular T34-85 of sniper rifles)

the NATO "308" round is 7.62X54;
the Russian "AK" round is 7.62X39.....clearly an inferior cartridge AFA "stopping power" is concerned!
(unless the "dragunov" is, in fact, chambered for the NATO round ?!?)
if you look it up on "Wiki", though, you will, in fact, find that the 30.06/M1-Garand round is superior in velocity/muzzle energy to the NATO round.....with the latest primers & propellants (cf: Federal ammo), it delivers A MASSIVE WHOOMPH that can't be surpassed!...i maintain that the "ought-6" is the BEST sniper calibre around except for the Barrett "50-clbr" but that is, generally, too akward for "shooting & scooting" which is, of course, what a sniper needs to do.....which leaves us, once again, with that old, reliable, work-horse.....the M1-Garand!
- Sth Korea currently has over 100000 of these "up for grabs"......
h ttp://volokh.com/2010/08/18/obama-bans-over-100000-rifles/ ....would be going "for a song"**
