An explosion has targeted a pipeline that carries Iran's natural gas to Turkey in the country's eastern province of Agri, which borders Iran.

The overnight explosion forced Turkish authorities to shut-down the conduit, IRNA quoted Anatolia news agency as saying on Wednesday.

Turkish security forces have tightened security measures in the region and started an investigation into the incident.

Militants of the separatist Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) are blamed for the incident, according to local officials.

Last month a similar blast occurred in another section of the pipeline close to the eastern Turkish town of Dogubayazit, near Iran's border.

The value of Iran's gas export to Turkey in 2009 was almost $7 bn.
