Madrid - The Spanish government faced calls for a re-think of the country's military presence in Afghanistan Thursday, a day after two Spanish police officers were killed there.

The Catalan regionalist party CiU, which has in the past backed the mission, said a debate should be opened on Spain's participation in a 'war that the international community has very probably lost.'

The far-left party Izquierda Unida (IU), which opposed Spain joining NATO, urged Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government to immediately recall Spanish troops from Afghanistan.

The living conditions of the Afghans had only worsened, an IU spokesman said, accusing the Zapatero government of participating in a 'war subordinated to US interests.'

Spain has about 1,000 troops as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

Spain's main opposition conservative People's Party (PP) did not directly criticize the country's presence in Afghanistan but urged the government to call it a 'war mission' instead of a peace mission.

Leire Pajin from Zapatero's Socialist Party noted that parliament had already given its backing to Spanish soldiers and police officers forming part of the international forces in Afghanistan
