The Chinese government has leveled criticism at Washington over plans to grant export licenses to US firms in a bid to sell radar equipment to Taiwan.

"China firmly opposes the United States selling weapons and relevant technical assistance to Taiwan," AFP quoted Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu as saying in Beijing on Friday.

"We urge the United States... to revoke their wrong decision and put an end to arms sales to Taiwan and military ties with Taiwan to avoid causing new harm to Sino-US ties," she continued.

Earlier this year, Beijing broke off its military relations with Washington after the US declared it was going to deliver an arms package, including missiles, helicopters and upgraded F-16 fighter jets, to Taiwan.

Last week, Taiwan's President Ma Ying-jeou once again called on US officials to sell multi-functional F-16 fighter jets to the island in light of China's growing military might.
