Guards have opened fire on inmates to put down a riot at a US prison, injuring seven prisoners, who were later sent to the hospital.
The melee, which involved 200 inmates, broke out in the exercise yard of Folsom prison in California on Friday night and lasted for about half an hour, BBC reported.
More than 45 prison staff members started to quell the violence using gas "chemical agents" but they finally resorted to rifle fire as "the desired result wasn't achieved," prison spokesman Luis Patino said.
The prisoners' injuries are not believed to be life-threatening, Patino added.
Following the riot, the medium security prison, which holds 4000 inmates — more than twice the number of inmates it is designed for — was put under lockdown and an investigation into the cause of the incident was launched.
